Read: Zechariah 4:1-10 & Matthew 13: 1-17; 31-34.
Dear Fellow Justice Traveler,
As a gardener, I am always nurturing plants from seed to harvest. Year after year I plant small, finicky seeds in my windowsill when the snow is falling, believing that some day, when the winter is past and new life breaks forth outside, my plants will be able to handle the elements and bear fruit. This ongoing rhythm holds a deep connection to my faith practice as well. It takes faith to believe that what we plant will give birth to anything - from the physical to the spiritual world. As followers of Christ we cling to the faith we have, rightly asking for more to believe that our actions big or small will have impact for the kingdom. Our human tendency is to invest where we can be guaranteed the opportunity to see our investment succeed - and with big, quantifiable results. We think that small efforts don’t yield big, impressive outcomes, but that is not the upside down kingdom of Jesus. The good work of kingdom restoration is a deeply spiritual work, done in many small investments over long periods of time.
